ARIC'S PASSION - HELPING YOUNG PEOPLE
From an early age, Aric displayed an unusual sense of empathy.
His sensitivity and compassion for others led him to devote time to volunteer roles, especially with children and young people. Aric made the most of volunteer opportunities that gave him first-hand experience with helping others, particularly disadvantaged young people. Aric volunteered at the Behavioral Health unit at Children’s Hospital in Bellevue, at the University of Washington Hospital, and volunteered for charities helping African refugees, including Horn of Africa Services in Seattle, and made a trip to South Africa to volunteer teach disadvantaged students. His family and friends believe he would have made a significant impact in the lives of others, and in the world, as a psychologist or psychiatrist, with his natural gifts of empathy, curiosity, quiet charm, patience, sense of humor and intelligence.

ARIC'S GOALS at the U.W. DEPT. OF PSYCHOLOGY
Because he was able to overcome tough challenges growing up, Aric believed he would be in a unique position to help others facing similar challenges. Aric strongly believed that people can overcome obstacles, achieve their goals and live a fulfilling and joyful life with the right perspective and support. He was also intensely interested in a wide range of topics that could directly help those suffering with anxiety and other mental and emotional challenges. His family and friends believe he would have thrived in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington, where he could have explored the many areas that interested him. Aric believed that humanity was still in the very early stages of understanding human psychology and that new knowledge, new therapies and more holistic approaches to human mental and emotional health were likely to emerge. He wanted very much to be a part of and influence psychology’s future direction.

Aric was motivated to help others in large part because he
overcame his own very difficult struggles with anxiety as a teenager. He was sensitive and unusually empathetic from a very young age,
and as he grew into a teenager, he was overcome by frequent
and debilitating anxiety. It was through several years of counseling
and therapy and the intensive support of his family and friends that
he was able to overcome his struggles and live a vibrant and happy life.
Aric, his family and his friends knew that his life could easily have
turned out much differently and they are all extremely grateful for the
counselors, teachers, family and friends that worked so hard to guide him.
As he grew stronger, more confident and more capable, he was able to
recognize his anxiety and take specific positive steps to overcome his fears
and achieve his goals. He wanted to help others do the same.
