Thanks to the efforts of a long-time family friend, Lindsay Baringer, the Chandler family has established the Aric Chandler Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Washington to provide annual grants to undergraduate students enrolled in the Psychology Department. Because it is an endowment, it will provide grants to students every year in perpetuity. This means in our lifetimes there will be literally dozens of students who will receive financial assistance to achieve their goals and continue Aric's life's work.
Contributions are tax deductible as charitable donations to a 501(c)(3) and eligible for company matching (by those companies who support donations to the University of Washington). For Tyee Club members, a portion of the contribution will add to your Tyee points.
The Chair of the U.W. Department of Psychology shall determine the student(s) to receive the grant, based on academic merit and financial need. Like Aric, the recipient must be a transfer student from a Washington community college, and he or she must be committed to working with young people. There are about 150 community college transfer students in the Department of Psychology, so there will be plenty of opportunities to select an appropriate student.
The amount of money granted to students each year is determined by the size of the endowment fund. Thanks to the efforts of over 90 friends and family, we have raised over $120,000. As a result, the first grant to a student of $4,000 was awarded to an aspiring student in November 2017, and three more grants have been made annually since. You can learn more about those amazing young people on the Scholarship Recipients page. As an endowed scholarship, annual grants to deserving students will now continue every year in perpetuity. Because the need is so great, we are continuing to raise funds and ask you to join us by contributing to this important scholarship endowment fund.
Funds are held in trust by the University of Washington which has over $3.4 billion in endowment investments to support over 4,000 endowed scholarships, professorships and research. While the Department of Psychology is one of the largest departments, it has among the least in endowment funding; in fact, Aric's scholarship will be only the third endowed scholarship fund, and the ONLY fund for undergraduates transferring from Washington's community colleges. This endowment meets a huge financial need for these students.
The Board of Regents of the University of Washington oversee all investments. Recent historic returns have been about 7 percent. The Board of Regents also determines grant levels, which are currently 4 percent, which allows for continuing growth in grant levels over time. As an endowment, the grant level is expected to grow over time, while maintaining the principal balance, to ensure grants in perpetuity.
